It’s difficult to blog this month without mentioning the state of the planet.
My journalism unit this semester had me become diligent in keeping up with the news, and even now that it’s finished, ABC News Radio has become my preferred station. It’s important to know as much as we can about what’s going on. It’s important to know that no media presents a completely unbiased report. It’s important to know that we understand things not as they are, but as we are.
Its easy to dwell on the horrific things taking place across the globe. It’s easy to focus on the hate and the prejudice and it’s easy to become opinionated and loud amongst all the noise being created on social media.
But I don’t. I don’t enter into debates about refugees or same sex marriage or whatever the hot topic seems to be at the time. Who ever changed anyone’s mind about something by aggressively and condescendingly “sharing” their opinion on Facebook anyway?
I believe the most important thing to do this this: shut your mouth, live your life simply, work hard at loving those in your direct sphere of influence, pray for injustice and walk humbly.
I love Micah 6:8, which says “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do,what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.”
I am not downplaying very real issues. Get another sponsor child, give to the Salvos, support where you can support, act when you can act. But let’s love mercy, act justly, and walk humbly.
Because at least then, our tiny corner of the globe will be that little bit brighter.
